  • Leaf Surface
    • Bumpy - Bumpy

    • Punctate - Surface covered with microscopic pits.

    • Bifoliate - A compound leaf with two leaflets attached at the end of the petiole (creosote bush).

    • Bipinnate - (Twice pinnate) A compound leaf with a primary (pinna) and secondary (Pinnule) axes with leaflets arranged pinnately (like a feather) along the secondary axes.

    • Palmate - Compound leaves with leaflets arranged like fingers on a hand.

    • Palmately bipinnatifid - Primary divisions attached like fingers on a hand (palmately), pinnatifid leaflets attached to these primary divisions pinnately (cloak ferns).

    • Pinnate - (Single pinnate) Compound leaves with leaflets arranged pinnately along a central axis.

    • Pinnately bipinnatifid - Pinnatifid leaflets attached pinnately to the main leaf axis (various ferns)

    • Pinnately pinnatifid - Compound leaves with pinnatifid leaflets (leaflets with pinnate interconnected lobes) arranged pinnately on a main central axis (carrots).
    • Simple - Leaves with one blade. These blades can be lobed and might resemble compound leaves, but if there is leaf tissue connecting the bases of the lobes, the leaf is simple, not compound.
